The calculator first converts your area to square meters, then divides by the size of each unit. Calculations use exact fractions, and the only rounding is the one applied when a value is displayed.

The foot, yard, mile and acre used here
The foot, yard and mile in these definitions are the international ones (exactly 0.3048 m, 0.9144 m and 1,609.344 m). The square yard and the square mile are the squares of the international yard and mile, and the acre is 43,560 square feet of that foot, so exactly 4,046.8564224 m². In the United States there is also the U.S. survey foot, and an acre or a square mile based on it is very slightly larger (an acre of about 4,046.873 m²). They are different values, and this converter uses the international ones.

How many acres are in a hectare?
One hectare is about 2.471054 acres. One acre is exactly 0.40468564224 hectares.
How many square feet are in a square yard, and how many acres in a square mile?
A square yard is exactly 9 square feet. A square mile is exactly 640 acres.
Is an acre the same everywhere?
This converter uses the international acre (43,560 square feet of the international foot). An acre or a square mile defined with the U.S. survey foot is very slightly different, so check which definition a document uses when the exact figure matters.
