Mean & Median Calculator
Enter your numbers to find the mean (average) and the median, along with the count, sum, maximum, minimum and range.
How the mean and median are calculated
- Mean = the sum of the numbers ÷ how many there are.
- Median = the middle value when the numbers are sorted from smallest to largest. With an even count, it is the average of the two middle values.
- Range = maximum − minimum.
Calculations are exact (no floating-point errors), and only the mean is rounded to the number of decimal places you choose. Negative values are rounded by their absolute value and the sign is restored.
Mean versus median
The mean is pulled toward extreme values; the median is not. The mean of 1, 2, 3 and 100 is 26.5, but the median is 2.5. For data with a few extreme values, such as incomes or prices, the median is often closer to a typical value.
Examples
- 2, 4, 4, 6, 9: mean 5, median 4, sum 25, count 5, maximum 9, minimum 2
- 1, 2, 3, 4: mean 2.5, median 2.5 (the average of 2 and 3)
- 1, 2, 3, 100: mean 26.5, median 2.5
Frequently asked questions
Is "average" the same as the mean?
In everyday use, "average" usually means the mean. Strictly, the median and the mode are also kinds of average. This calculator shows the mean and the median; it does not calculate the mode.
How do I find the median of an even number of values?
Sort the values, then average the two middle ones. For 1, 2, 3, 4 the middle values are 2 and 3, so the median is 2.5.
How many numbers can I enter?
Up to 1,000 numbers, each with up to 12 digits before the decimal point and up to 6 decimal places.
