Hourly to Salary Calculator

Convert an hourly wage, daily pay, monthly pay or annual salary into the others. You can set the hours per day, the working days per month and an annual bonus.

How the conversion works

The conversion uses the hours per day and the working days per month. The number of months in a year is fixed at 12.

The reverse direction uses the same formulas. To get the hourly wage from an annual salary, subtract the bonus, divide by 12 (monthly pay), then divide by the working days per month and the hours per day.

The default assumption: about 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year

The form starts with 8 hours per day and 21.666667 working days per month. That is 5 working days a week for 52 weeks, which is 260 working days a year, divided by 12 months. This gives the commonly used year of about 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks).

Note that 260 ÷ 12 does not end: it is 21.6666…, and the form uses 21.666667, which is the same number rounded to 6 decimal places. So the year in the calculation is 2,080.000032 hours, not exactly 2,080. The difference is far less than a cent in the displayed amounts: an hourly wage of 25.00 is shown as an annual salary of 52,000.00, and the small print "before rounding" shows 52,000.0008. The displayed amounts are rounded to the smallest unit of the currency.

If you type 21.67 days instead, the year has 2,080.32 hours, and 25.00 an hour becomes 52,008.00. Change the hours and days to match your real schedule, for example 7.5 hours a day or a different number of working days. Paid leave, unpaid weeks and public holidays are not treated separately. Enter the number of working days you really expect to be paid for.

To find the working days per month from a count of days worked in a year, use days worked in a year ÷ 12. For example, 250 days a year is 20.833333 days a month.

How the bonus is treated

The annual bonus is a separate input and is added to the annual salary only. For example, an hourly wage of 25.00 with 8 hours and 21.666667 days gives a monthly pay of 4,333.33 (without the bonus). With an annual bonus of 5,000.00, the annual salary is 52,000.00 + 5,000.00 = 57,000.00. When converting from an annual salary, the bonus is subtracted first, and the rest is the basis for the monthly, daily and hourly amounts.

Rounding happens only once

Every result is calculated exactly from the number you entered and rounded once, at the end, to the smallest unit of the currency. Nothing is built up from rounded intermediate results, because that can make the totals drift by a cent. When the value before rounding is not a whole number of the smallest unit, it is shown in small print as "before rounding". You can choose round down, round to nearest (the default) or round up.

Assumptions and limits

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn an annual salary into an hourly wage?

Choose "Annual salary" and enter the amount. If there is a bonus, enter it too; the hourly wage is then worked out from the salary without the bonus.

Does the monthly pay include the bonus?

No. The monthly, daily and hourly amounts are the pay without the bonus. Only the annual salary includes it.

Why does 25.00 an hour give 52,000.00 a year?

Because the default year has about 2,080 hours: 8 hours × 260 days (the form uses 21.666667 days a month, which is 260 ÷ 12 rounded, so the exact figure before rounding is 52,000.0008). Change the hours per day or the working days per month if your schedule is different.

Can I find my take-home pay?

No. This calculator converts gross amounts only, before tax and other deductions.
