How the sale price is calculated

The rounding is applied once, to the amount saved. You can choose round down (the default), round to nearest, or round up. A shop may round differently, so the sale price you see in a store can differ by one unit.

For example, 20% off an original price of 100.00 saves 20.00, so the sale price is 80.00.

How the discount percentage is calculated

If the original price is 100.00 and the sale price is 80.00, the discount is (100 − 80) ÷ 100 × 100 = 20.00%. The percentage is rounded to 2 decimal places.

If the sale price is higher than the original price, the amount saved and the percentage are shown as negative values, and a notice says it is a price increase.

Discounts applied one after another

Two discounts do not add up. Taking 20% off and then 10% off is not 30% off.

The total discount is 28%, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already reduced price. To combine them, multiply the remaining fractions: 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, so you pay 72% of the original price, a 28% discount.

Examples

Original price Discount Amount saved Sale price
10,000.00 20% 2,000.00 8,000.00
49.99 25% (round down) 12.49 37.50
49.99 25% (round to nearest) 12.50 37.49
19.99 33.33% 6.66 13.33

The second and third rows show the effect of rounding: 25% of 49.99 is 12.4975, which becomes 12.49 when rounded down and 12.50 when rounded to nearest.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

What is 30% off 80?

30% of 80 is 24, so the sale price is 56.

Can I add 20% off and 10% off to get 30% off?

No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the total is 28% (you pay 72% of the original price).

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by the fraction you paid. If you paid 80 after 20% off, the original price is 80 ÷ 0.8 = 100. The Reverse Percentage Calculator does this for you.

What is 50% off in other words?

Half price. The sale price is half of the original price.
